Lodging for Angie and Zak's wedding

Here is a list of places you might want to stay near our venue (The Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo, WA).

The first two, marked with asterisks, are "preferred" venues: they are both very close to the wedding site, and will offer discounted prices to our guests. The rest are places we've looked up—some we've visited, but not all—and are all in the area.

When looking up lodging, here are some things to keep in mind:
  • The town is Poulsbo, WA
  • also nearby are Bainbridge Island and Silverdale
  • Seattle is only a half-hour ferry ride and 10 min. shuttle ride away
  • Unless you are renting a car, it's best to stay near Pioneer Square, Downtown, or Bell Town
  • The area is known as the Kitsap Peninsula
  • Bremerton and Gig Harbor, also on Kitsap, are a bit futher away: about a 30 and 50 min drive, respectively. Port Townsend on the Olympic Pensinsula is about an hour away.
  • Kiana Lodge is located at 14976 Sandy Hook Rd. NE, Poulsbo WA

A Few of Our Favorite Things

For those who are itching to shop, need the time to find good deals, or are just plain curious about our taste (!!), we have registered at these places:
We also want to ask that if you are so inclined, we would really and truly love pieces of art or crafts that you've made. Paintings, jewelry, ornaments, recipe books — homemade items created with care and attention are simply some of the best gifts ever. We LOVE to cook and welcome any family recipes.

And since we will be celebrating shared values as well as love, any gifts given in the spirit of community, sustainability, craftsmanship . . . all things local, seasonal, and whimsical . . . will be deeply cherished.

We've chosen a photographer

On Saturday Angie and I met with Scott and Amy Squire to discuss photography for our wedding. As with the Kiana Lodge, we pretty much found the perfect vendor on our first try. Their business is called NonFiction Weddings (go ahead and click!), and we think they'll be the ideal folks to capture the day.

Though while Kiana was found online through pure luck, Scott and Amy came to us through a mutual friend.

My friend and former coworker from Heyday Books, William Justice, has recently written a book for Heyday called Edges of Bounty: Adventures in the Edible Valley, featuring photographs by Scott Squire. (For those of you interested in local food, local economies, sustainability, and stories of other worlds in your own backyard—especially those of you in California!—this book is stunning and actually surprising to look at, and William's humble prose reads like poetry.) William came up to Seattle for an author tour event at Elliott Bay Books, so we met him and we all went out with a big group for dinner after the reading.

Scott, a West Seattle local, was equal participant in the reading, conducting not only the slide show but also offering descriptive counterpoints to William's talk. And his wife Amy was there as well, hard to miss as she was about 27 weeks pregnant (I think that's right). Needless to say, Amy and Angie bonded at the dinner afterward, as Amy described the home birth she envisioned. "I like them," was Angie's simple pronunciation on the car ride home that evening. "I think we should have them do our wedding." So it is written.

On a side note, Amy and Scott did not get their dreamed-of home birth, as the baby popped out rather unexpectedly at 30 weeks or thereabouts. That's about two months premature. However all is well with Scott, Amy, and the aptly named young Hale True. You can read more about their story—illustrated by some ridiculously professional photography—on their blog, It's Your World, Hale True.

And that's the long story of how we found our photographers and new friends!

Happy New Year and the Big To-Do

Well, 'tis been awhile since our last post. That's okay, since we haven't really told anyone about this site yet. But now it is 2009, and we have fewer than nine months to go (!!). In addition to our two book purchases (The Anti-Bride Wedding Planner and The Knot Guide for the Groom), we have also been using the website TheKnot.com for our planning. It's brazenly commercial, but heck, that's the whole wedding industry. Anyway they give good advice for modern couples and they have free budget calculators and checklists.

So even though we haven't checked in since October, it looks like we're on track: we've booked our ceremony/reception venue (at the Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo, about an hour away from us on the Kitsap Peninsula), talked with the caterer, and decided on a color scheme (see previous entry).

We have begun researching hotels, guest houses, and B&Bs in the area, and will soon be booking a block of rooms. We're working now on finalizing our guest list and putting together a gift registry. And pretty soon too we will be emailing save-the-date notices (though most of you won't actually be reading this until after you've received those). We're still working on minor details like getting an officiant, and oh yes . . . the rings.

Check back in with us soon for more info. We'll be posting information on lodging, gift registries, activities, and even a who's-who in the various extended clans.

Until then, have a warm and prosperous New Year!
